Frequently Asked Questions
← Back to HomeHow do NFC Dice work? ▼
Inside each token is a tiny, unpowered NFC chip. When you tap the token to a compatible smartphone, the phone powers the chip wirelessly and reads the link stored inside, automatically opening it in your web browser.
Do I need a special app to use them? ▼
Nope! Most modern smartphones (Almost all Android phones from the last several years and iPhone XS and newer) have NFC readers built-in and enabled by default. Just tap the token to the top-back of your phone.
Are the dice balanced for rolling? ▼
Our dice use a high-precision physics engine to simulate real-world gravity, friction, and collisions, ensuring every roll is naturally balanced. Each throw is triggered by randomized initial velocities, making results statistically fair and impossible to predict. For more information, go to (https://github.com/3d-dice/dice-box).
How are they made? ▼
We 3D print these using Elegoo PLA+ on a Bambu A1 with an AMS Lite, which is how we get those clean, dual-color designs. Halfway through the print, the machine pauses so we can drop an NFC tag straight into the plastic before it gets completely sealed up. Once the print is finished, we program each hidden tag with its specific link so it actually works the second you scan it.
Can I print my own or buy these elsewhere? ▼
We keep our files private to protect our original designs, which have been meticulously tuned to ensure the dice roll perfectly and the NFC tags trigger to our webpage instantly and efficiently. Because of this, the only way to get the genuine, high-performance NFC Dice is through our official Etsy shop. If you see these for sale anywhere else, they aren't ours and won't have our guaranteed quality or programming.
Can I change the link on the tag myself? ▼
To ensure the tokens work perfectly, we "lock" the tags to a specific URL during the programming phase. This prevents the data from being accidentally overwritten or corrupted, ensuring the NFC Tag always triggers the right page.
My phone isn't reading the tag ▼
Most iPhones have the reader at the very top edge, while many Androids have it in the center-back. If it doesn't trigger immediately, try slowly sliding the token across the back of your phone until you find the "sweet spot." Also, make sure your phone is unlocked!
If I own two of the same kind of token, can they have different settings? ▼
Your customizations are saved to your device’s local storage rather than on the physical token itself. Because all tokens of the same dice type (like two different d20s) link to the same webpage, your phone will apply the same saved colors and modifiers to both of them. To have different setups for two of the same die, you would need to access them from different devices or possibly browsers.
Why is there no d100? ▼
The physics engine used for the site doesn't include a native d100 model, and even if it did I didn't want to charge for something you can already do with a different token. Since you can easily set the d10 to roll 2d10 in the settings and calculate the percentile yourself, selling a separate d100 felt redundant.
